Weight Loss Motivation – Happy Faces Do More Than Cheer You Up
Think those photos of smiling children on the refrigerator door are corny? Think again. A new study in the Journal of Consumer Research shows that being in a good mood expands our ability to put things in perspective and helps toward attaining seemingly daunting goals. And that could be as simple as motivating better food choices.
“A positive mood enhances efforts to attain future well-being, encourages broader and flexible thinking, and increases openness to information,” write the study’s authors Aparna A. Labroo (University of Chicago) and Vanessa M. Patrick (University of Georgia). http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/11/081117121229.htm

Subjects were asked to view either happy, smiley faces or unhappy, fowny faces and then asked identical statements. Researchers found that viewing smiley faces before statements concluded in a more positive, constructive points of view.
Later, in follow-up studies, same researchers asked participants to describe either their happiest or unhappiest days of their life to prompt a corresponding mood. This included using three different questionnaires. They found that people, who felt happy, had the best perspective on what transpired in the past and could step back emotionally.
What does this mean for us? To keep alive one’s weight loss motivation, evoking feelings of happiness and well being are essential from time to time. We are like sponges, absorbing our environment. Viewing pictures of happy faces, even generic smiley faces, subconsciously lightens our mood. Simply putting pictures of happy faces on your refrigerator door can keep you in line with your weight loss goals. Quick to do and easy to accomplish.
