MSG Use Linked To Reasons For Obesity

Posted on November 20th, 2009.

MSG, monosodium glutamate, once thought prevalent in chinese food restaurants only, sneaks into the standard american diet as another culprit on the list of reasons for obesity.

  • People who use MSG as a flavor enhancer are more likely than people who don’t use it to be overweight or obese even though they have the same amount of physical activity and total calorie intake, according to a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Public Health study.

There are numerous studies using rats indicating that weight gain and MSG are linked. Unfortunately, many of these studies are influenced by corporations who have a lot at stake in the US market. Natural and artificial flavors can be comprised mainly of MSG and are prevalent in all of todays processed foods. Just take a look. These corporations use underhanded tactics to thwart and distort data that demonstrates the reasons for weight gain and MSG use.

This report by UNC School of Public Health is the first study to show a link between MSG use and weight gain in people. The study chose participants living in rural Chinese areas because very little commercially processed food is consumed but MSG use is common. They found being overweight was significantly higher in MSG users than non-users. Even after taking into account various other factors such as physical activity, differences in BMI and total calorie intake, the link between MSG use and reasons for obesity were the same as in the animal studies.

The reasons for obesity are many and if MSG is as big a cause as I personally believe it is, we as a nation need to fight back. Cease buying and consuming commercially processed food containing natural and artificial flavors. Read your ingredients! Big business won’t listen otherwise and the FDA does not protect our health as individuals. MSG is not common in american food anymore but natural and artificial flavors as ingredients are. Which maybe just as bad or even worse for obesity.
