Why A Mother’s High-fat Diet Contributes To Obese Babies

Posted on October 13th, 2009.

Obese babies are not a pretty sight (albeit still cute). Research suggests that moms-to-be women should think long and hard about ingesting high fat foods. Female mice fed high fat diets were more likely to have oversized offspring.  Fat causes the placenta to go into hyperdrive by providing too many nutrients to the fetus,

reported in a study from the University of Cincinnati and the Medical College of Georgia. Oversized offspring increase the risk factors for overweight and then obesity later in life. The good new is, such results also suggests the opposite holds true to —high fat diets could help prevent undersized babies.

  • “Our model may one day lead to dietary recommendations for mothers who are entering pregnancy overweight or obese,” said Helen N. Jones, Ph.D., first author of the study. “We hope this research will ultimately help reduce the number of babies suffering from birth injuries, decrease C-section rates, and lower the risk of babies becoming overweight or obese later in life.” Or even obese babies. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/09/080930135251.htm

Interesting phenomena that’s been happening the last 20 years or so. Babies are being born bigger. No one really knows why. C-sections are more common, which is understandable, vaginal births being more problematic with a large baby.

Are obese babies becoming more the norm because our diets are so rich in nutrients? I think not. The vitamin and mineral content of vegetable and grains are

going down, even as genetic modifications are going up. More foods are becoming processed as baking and packaging practices continue to streamline. (Bigger are better for profits and greater outreach of markets - which is understandable to).

Where does this leave us? Something is changing and not for the better. More studies are coming to light pointing to the mom’s diet being a factor in obese babies. Don’t wait to make things right for your little ones. Eat better now.
