How Fatty Foods Curb Hunger, A Better Natural Appetite Suppressant?

You may think that fatty foods are not a good healthy diet choice but those rich in unsaturated fats – such as avocados, nuts and olive oil – do more than you think. They send a message to your brain; ‘You are full!’ acting like a natural appetite suppressant.

A new study by University of California, Irvine pharmacologists shows that these fats trigger production of a compound in the small intestine that curbs hunger pangs

In the complex arena of feeling full via the brain, Daniele Piomelli and her colleagues have studied how a fat-derived compound called oleoylethanolamide regulates hunger and body weight. The Oct. 8 issue of Cell Metabolism surmises their current work that an unsaturated fatty acid called oleic acid stimulates production of OEA, which in turn decreases appetite. In an earlier study, Piomelli found that increasing OEA levels can reduce appetite, produce weight loss and lower blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

There is potential for OEA to be developed into a variety of drugs because of the way the body naturally handles fatty foods and regulates eating and body weight. Although I personally can see the benefits of such a product, I am more enthusiastic that certain foods help stem appetite, serving as a natural appetite suppressant instead.

Although nearly 30% of American are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and obesity is on the rise by almost 60% since 1991. I think answers are at hand and people can take back their lives, if they want to. There is no need to risk premature death, diabetes, heart disease, stroke and even some cancers just because nearly everyone around you is on the same road - overeating - without any regard to how their bodies need to stay in good health.
