Flies Are So Hard To Swat - Helping You Lose Weight Naturally?
Ever wonder how those pesky flies are so darn fast? Well, it’s not in their speed; it’s in their brain. Michael Dickinson of the Esther M. and Abe M. Zarem Professor of Bioengineering at the California Institute of Technology has got the answer. Using a high-speed digital cameral and a handy grad student (Gwyneth Card) armed with a fly swatter, they studied fruit flies evasive maneuvering techniques repeatedly.

Turns out the fly’s brain calculates where that swatter is going to land and plans an escape route, placing all it’s legs in the best position. It’s rather quick in its calculations, taking place before 100 milliseconds have passed of spotting the impending threat. The fly may be doing fly like things (grooming, feeding etc) but when it spots peril, it somehow knows what postural changes to make to be in the best preflight position.
Dickinson’s research suggests an optimal method for actually swatting a fly. “It is best not to swat at the fly’s starting position, but rather to aim a bit forward of that to anticipate where the fly is going to jump when it first sees your swatter,” he says. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/08/080828135901.htm
This post has little if anything to do with helping you lose weight naturally except I can remember my grandmother prowling around the kitchen just looking’ for the little ba… if she only knew the correct angle of attack… she wouldn’t of burned off so many calories!
