No Longer In Doubt, Insecticide Poisoning Linked To Reasons For Obesity

Posted on February 5th, 2010.

DDE, a breakdown product of DDT, has been found to adversely affect those whose mothers were exposed while pregnant. Reasons for obesity from environmental sources are on the rise.
Banned from use in the USA in 1973, the byproducts of DDT still exist in aquatic and marine life today, especially fatty fish tissues. Researchers from Michigan State University studied more than 250 moms for their expose to DDE who eat fish from and live along Lake Michigan.

Participants who had intermediate levels of DDE, were found on average to have more than 13 pounds in excess weight, compared to the lowest levels. The participants with higher levels had gained more than 20 pounds excess weight.

“Prenatal exposure to toxins is increasingly being looked at as a potential cause for the rise in obesity seen worldwide,” said Janet Osuch, a professor of surgery and epidemiology at MSU’s College of Human Medicine, who was one of the lead authors of the study. “What we have found for the first time is exposure to certain toxins by eating fish from polluted waters may contribute to the obesity epidemic in women.”

“These findings not only apply to the offspring of women in our cohort but to any woman who has been exposed to high levels of DDE when she was growing in her mother’s womb,” Osuch said. “Mothers with the highest DDE levels are women who have consumed a lot of fish or high-fat meats.”

As more reasons for obesity keep being discovered from environmental sources, it is important to continually lessen the amount we carry. However, detoxing from such poisons is beyond the scope of this post.  It can be done. My own mother became toxic with PCB’s from the Housatonic River leeching into her well water. She was successful in clearing them out.

The current recommendation for seafood environmental toxins is to limit fatty fish to twice a week, including tuna fish. A great site for determining what is up-to-date safe, what isn’t (and how endangered the species may be) go to http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/seafoodwatch.aspx
Never give up the fight to be healthy or knowledgeable about the many reasons for obesity!
