Fatty Liver Diet Weight Loss Reverses Disease

Posted on September 11th, 2009.

Having too much fat stored in the liver is known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Studies testing orlistat for improvement in fatty liver diet concluded that while the drug did not make a difference in the disease, weight loss did.

  • Weight loss improves liver enzymes and levels of fat in the liver, and the study showed participants who lost 5 percent or more of body weight over nine months showed improvement in insulin resistance and steatosis (fat accumulation in the liver), and those who lost at least 9 percent showed reversal of their liver damage.

In an another study, researchers determined that children with fatty liver disease also had irregularities in glucose and fat metabolism, including lower levels of HDL cholesterol, the so called good cholesterol. Those without a fatty liver did not have markers of metabolic problems. The age old question of whether bodies shaped like pears or apples made no difference, it was fat in the liver that influenced metabolic risk.

Metabolic risks for fatty liver disease was related to the release of larger amounts of fatty acids into the bloodstream that were, in turn, linked to elevated triglycerides and to insulin resistance, a key precursor to type 2 diabetes.

The good new is fatty liver disease is completely reversible.  When you lose weight, you quickly get rid of fat in your liver. Doesn’t appear to be dependent upon a specific fatty liver diet. Two days of calorie restriction can improve the situation remarkably. As fat in the liver is reduced, insulin sensitivity and metabolic problems change for the better.

As my favorite physician will sing out loud ‘the quiver in your liver, my dear… is fully curable!’
