Chocoholics! Stop Food Cravings With Walking?!
They say an apple a day keeps the doctor at bay but what about those of us who need a little bit of chocolate to keep our spirits healthy? New study shows talking a brisk 15 minute walk reduces food cravings.Participants were asked to take a brief 5 minute walk before engaging in a task that would normally prompt chocolate cravings, activities such as opening a bar of chocolate or a tough mental challenge. To see if they could reduce or stop food cravings, study candidates already had done without chocolate for 3 days prior.

Professor Adrian Taylor of the University of Exeter comments: “Our ongoing work consistently shows that brief bouts of physical activity reduce cigarette cravings, but this is the first study to link exercise to reduced chocolate cravings. Neuroscientists have suggested common processes in the reward centers of the brain between drug and food addictions, and it may be that exercise effects brain chemicals that help to regulate mood and cravings. This could be good news for people who struggle to manage their cravings for sugary snacks and want to lose weight.”

Most health plans advocate 30 minute walk each day promotes good health. Breaking it up into two 15 minute brisk walks could really make a difference. By helping to stop food cravings, one could monitor caloric intake easily as well as feed emotional well being at the same time. Chocoholics know that the temporary mood enhancement received from chocolate can result in a habit, a very rich, expensive, caloric one at that. And a habit that pops up most when under stress or a mentally challenging situation.
