Cutting Calorie Food Intake, Not Exercise, Plays Bigger Role In Maintaining Weight Loss

Posted on October 9th, 2009.

New research suggests that for those who have been successful at losing weight, cutting calorie food intake is an effective way to keep the weight off, especially when you don’t make time to exercise. In findings published in the May issue of Obesity, the researchers of UAB’s (University of Alabama at Birmingham) EatRight Weight Management system reported that 80% of EatRight participants maintained their weight loss. During two the years of follow up, the participants kept the weight off mostly by sticking to a low calorie, low energy density diet.

The cutting calorie food intake helped with successful weight maintenance even though the individuals did not necessarily comply with recommended exercise levels. 89 former EatRight participants were followed for two years. The scoop is 80% who had successfully maintained their weight loss consumed fewer calories than those who gained weight. They tended to eat a diet consisting of low energy density foods. What exactly are a low density foods? Foods that have fewer calories by volume such as fruits, whole grains and vegetables. Some consider nuts and seeds part of this category too. A diet comprised of low energy density foods means an individual can eat more yet take in fewer calories than with high energy density foods, such as meats, cheeses, sugars and fats.

There is some concern that individuals who don’t exercise regularly may tend to feel like a failure, lowering their belief in themselves and their abilities. Possibly even ditching the attempt to exercise at all! “It’s clear that exercise combined with a low energy density diet is the best approach for weight loss and overall good health,” said Dr. Ard of the study. “But many people report finding time to exercise is a major obstacle. It’s encouraging to report that weight loss can be maintained primarily through a low calorie diet.”

We, here at ThinexaWeightLoss.com, have known this for ages. Cutting calorie intake gives you the ability to reach your weight loss goals without extra exercise and then maintain it with ease. Don’t just take out word for it.
